Austin summer electricity bills are a real financial concern for homeowners in this market. Older homes with inefficient appliances, inadequate insulation, and windows that pass solar heat gain into the kitchen can see July and August bills north of $300 to $400. The kitchen is one of the highest-energy rooms in the home, and upgrading its energy performance has both an environmental and a financial return.
Here are the kitchen upgrades that make the most meaningful difference in Austin energy consumption, with current Austin Energy rebate information where applicable.
ENERGY STAR Appliance Upgrades

Kitchen appliances account for a significant portion of household electricity consumption. Refrigerators run 24 hours a day. Dishwashers use both electricity and hot water. Ovens add heat load to the kitchen that the air conditioning must then remove.
Refrigerator: The Always-On Energy Draw
A refrigerator more than 10 years old uses significantly more electricity than a current ENERGY STAR model. ENERGY STAR-certified refrigerators use at least 15 percent less energy than the federal minimum standard, and compared to a 15-year-old unit, the savings are often 30 to 40 percent of the refrigerator’s annual energy consumption.
Austin Energy offers rebates on qualifying ENERGY STAR refrigerators. Check the Austin Energy rebate portal before purchasing, as rebate amounts and qualifying models change periodically.
Dishwasher: Hot Water Efficiency
Dishwashers certified under ENERGY STAR’s most efficient tier use both less electricity and less water per cycle than standard models. For an Austin household running the dishwasher daily, the annual energy and water savings are meaningful. ENERGY STAR dishwashers are also eligible for Austin Energy rebates.
Induction Cooktop: The Biggest Cooking Efficiency Gain
As detailed in an earlier post in this series, induction cooktops transfer approximately 85 percent of their energy to the cookware versus 40 to 55 percent for gas. In an Austin kitchen where summer cooking adds heat load to an already warm interior, this efficiency difference has two financial benefits: lower energy consumption from the cooktop itself and reduced air conditioning load from the lower ambient heat output.
LED Lighting Throughout the Kitchen

Kitchen lighting in homes built before 2010 is often a mix of incandescent and fluorescent fixtures that consume significantly more energy than equivalent LED replacements. A full kitchen LED lighting upgrade, including recessed cans, under-cabinet strips, and pendant fixtures, reduces lighting energy consumption by 70 to 80 percent compared to incandescent sources.
LED lighting also produces less heat than incandescent bulbs, which modestly reduces the cooling load in the kitchen during Austin’s hot months. The investment in a full kitchen LED upgrade typically pays back through energy savings within two to four years.
Insulation and Air Sealing in Exterior Kitchen Walls

Many Austin kitchens, particularly in homes built before 1990, have exterior walls with inadequate insulation. A kitchen on an exterior corner, with two or more walls exposed to the outside, can lose significant cooling energy in summer and heating energy in winter through under-insulated walls.
A kitchen remodel that opens exterior walls for cabinet installation or window work provides an opportunity to add or upgrade wall insulation at minimal incremental cost. The insulation materials cost $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot of wall cavity, and the labor is largely absorbed by the work that was already opening the wall. This is one of the best energy efficiency investments available during a kitchen remodel because the access cost is near zero.
Window Upgrades for Solar Heat Gain Control
Kitchen windows that face west or south in Austin receive intense direct sun during the hottest part of summer days. Single-pane windows and older double-pane windows without low-e coatings pass substantial solar heat gain into the kitchen, raising the interior temperature and increasing air conditioning load.
Replacing kitchen windows with high-performance double or triple-pane units with low-e coatings and solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC) appropriate for Austin’s climate reduces solar heat gain significantly. Austin Energy’s rebate program has historically included rebates for qualifying window replacements. Check the current rebate portal for active offerings.

Austin Energy offers a range of rebates and incentives for energy efficiency upgrades in residential properties. Their residential rebate portal lists current qualifying products and rebate amounts.
