LVP is dimensionally stable in ways that wood is not. Quality LVP products have a rigid core, typically SPC (stone plastic composite) or WPC (wood plastic composite), that resists expansion and contraction through humidity cycles. Wear Layer Thickness
The wear layer is the clear protective coating on the surface of LVP that protects against scratching and staining. Wear layer thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). For a kitchen with regular foot traffic and pets, a minimum 12-mil wear layer is appropriate. For high-traffic households with dogs, 20-mil or higher is worth the additional cost.
Core Type: SPC Over WPC for Kitchens
SPC (stone plastic composite) cores are denser and more dimensionally stable than WPC (wood plastic composite) cores. For kitchen applications in Austin’s humidity range, SPC is the better choice. It is harder underfoot than WPC but handles moisture and temperature variation more reliably over time.
Thickness
LVP products range from 4mm to 12mm total thickness. Thicker products, generally 6mm to 8mm with an attached underlayment, feel more substantial underfoot and hide minor subfloor imperfections better than thinner products. Locking System Quality
LVP planks connect with a click-lock system at the edges. Quality locking systems produce tight, stable joints that do not gap or shift over time. - It cannot be refinished. When LVP wear layers are scratched through, the product must be replaced rather than sanded and refinished like hardwood.
- It can be damaged by excessive heat. Placing a very hot item directly on LVP can cause warping. This is unlikely in normal kitchen use but worth knowing.
- Some products off-gas VOCs during and after installation. Look for FloorScore or GREENGUARD certified products to minimize indoor air quality concerns.
- Direct intense UV exposure can cause fading over time, relevant for kitchens with large south or west facing windows.
